This annual show displays the newest and best in tractors, skid steer loaders, commercial mowing equipment, all terrain vehicles, grain handling, computer software, fence building, hay equipment, buildings, backhoes, logging equipment, compact tractors, livestock equipment and a number of exhibits from colleges and universities. Special daily educational seminars, door prizes, cooking demonstrations and the National Kiddie Tractor Pull are also featured.

Power Show Ohio will span three days and fully fill four buildings on the grounds of the Ohio Expo Center. A scene that could be described as a “power equipment extravaganza.”
Given its staging at a time of year when buyers are ready to buy and manufacturers have their newest product introductions in place, the show garners the spotlight in the equipment industry.
From its humble beginning in 1971, Power Show Ohio has grown to nearly six times its original size. The first Power Show Ohio had 51 exhibitors and covered 54,000 square feet. The 2010 show will encompass 300,000 square feet with nearly 250 exhibitors.

It's not clear whether ConsumerGuide.com did any hands-on testing, but its editors give a Budget Buy award to the Toro Power Shovel. SnowBlowersDirect.com reviews the Power Shovel, and offers owner reviews as well.

Although it's only appropriate for light snowfalls and short, flat driveways, the Toro Power Curve snow blower has wheels, so it's easier to push than a power shovel. The Power Curve has a movable chute and an 18-inchclearing path. Reviews say the Toro 1800 Power Curve does a nice job, but definitely isn't built to handle 6 to 8 inches of wet snow on a long driveway. You'll have to contend with a power cord, but you won't have to worry about the engine maintenance and fueling required with gas-powered snow blowers.

Reviews say the Toro 1800 Power Curve is a good electric snow blower for light snow accumulations on small, paved areas such as sidewalks or short driveways. It has a 12-amp motor, an 18-inch-wide clearing path, and a 10-inch snow cut depth. This snow blower weighs just 24 pounds; it also has wheels, throws snow up to 30 feet and has an adjustable chute so you can discharge snow off to either side. If you'd rather not deal with a power cord or need to cover a bigger area, experts recommend a single-stage gas blower, the Toro Power Clear 210R (*Est. $520).

ConsumerReports.org has the best snow blower ratings overall and includes four electric blowers in its rankings, including the Toro 1800 Power Curve. Amazon.com has over 600 owner reviews of this model. We found fewer user reviews at Epinions.com and HomeDepot.com, but those that are there are useful. ConsumerGuide.com doesn't always base its ratings on hands-on use, but it says it tested the Toro 1800 and calls it a best buy. However, they are heavier, and they can't clean as close to paved surfaces as single-auger blowers. If you do have a long, hilly or gravel drive, reviewers say the budget Craftsman 88957 is a great value, as long as your typical snowfalls don't exceed about 8 inches. Nice features include a push-button electric starter and one-handed operation (which means you can adjust the chute without stopping). Its four-cycle engine is less polluting than two-cycle models, and you don't have to mix gas with oil. There are six forward and two reverse speeds, and big tires means you're not likely to get stuck. For deeper snows, however, you'll need a more expensive model.

Experts recommend the two-stage Craftsman 88957 for moderate-duty use. It is self-propelled, with six forward and two reverse speeds, and has a 24-inch clearing width. Like more expensive Craftsman models, the 88957 features single hand operation; you can steer with one hand and use the other to adjust the chute direction without stopping the machine. The Troy-Bilt Storm 2410 (*Est. $600) is virtually identical, but lacks single-hand operation; MTD manufactures both the Troy-Bilt and Craftsman brands. If you want a more powerful two-stage blower with a wider clearing path, reviews indicate that the Troy-Bilt 3090 XP (*Est. $1,100) should perform well.

ConsumerReports.org tests an earlier version of this blower, the Craftsman 88955, and includes it in the magazine's most recent ratings chart. The Stihl Ms 310 has state of the art features that will increase your firewood cutting efficiency.
First are the toolless fuel and oil caps. They have a flip-up top that makes them easy to grasp to open and close. The caps are also bayonet type without having to screw then on and off, just a push and twist and you are done. The flip tops felt a little flimsy to me and I can envision myself breaking one off. It took me a few times of filling the saw to get used to the bayonet caps. Twice I thought I had the oil cap secured but it popped off dumping the oil.

The next feature is the side-adjust chain tensioner. This is a screw slot between the two chain nuts that gives a quick, easy way to adjust the chain. Some of the other models have a Quick chain adjuster that is even easier to use, but it is not offered on the MS310. (yes I lost one of the bar nuts right away LOL but they gave me a new one free)
The last feature is the Intellicarb compensating carburetor." Measures air on clean side of air filter and adjusts metering diaphragm in carburetor". What this does is changes your air mixture as your air filter begins to plug up and allows the saw to continue to run on the same air fuel mixture for even power output. The air intake also has a setting for warm and cold weather to keep it running in top shape no matter your conditions.

It is a well built mower that is designed to be extremely maneuverable, so it is ideal if your lawn has many obstacles like flower beds or trees. The new AWD (all wheel drive) is automatic and loss of traction will force it to engage on all four wheels. The Husqvarna Rider can easily cope with a lawn that is is sloped or when mowing in wet conditions.

The maneuverability is further enhanced by the unique articulated steering system which allows the rear pair of wheels to swing in underneath the machine. The result is superior maneuverability with a 4 inch turning radius at full lock.
The mower has 3 cutting blades and a front mounted cutting deck. Cutting heights can be set from 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches. The front mounted cutting deck gives excellent accessibility into corners and under benches and bushes. The use of 3 blades makes for very efficient cutting and mulching and the removable BioChip, when installed, causes the clippings to be chopped into mulch under the cutting deck before falling onto the lawn and quickly turning into fertilizer.

The Husqvarna Rider R155 AWD comes with a pressure lubricated Kohler OHV-engine and wheel weights with ball bearings ensure maximum grip while ensuring minimum stress on the transmission. The blades are engaged automatically when the cutting deck is lowered and all controls are easy to reach from the driver’s seat. The seat itself is reasonably comfortable although some engine vibrations can be felt. the lack of a flat flat floor over the deck may make it harder to mount for less nimble gardeners.
Although the Husqvarna Rider R155 AWD is expensive (more than $US9000 for the basic model) it should provide years of excellent service. Slightly cheaper, without the AWD, is the Husqvarna Rider R155G2. A good choice of riding lawn mower that will have your lawn looking professionally finished in minimum time.

Gas powered lawn and garden equipment are environmental disasters. Here are some ugly statistics from the EPA.
• Gas lawn mowers create 5 percent of U.S. air pollution; and even higher percentage in metropolitan areas.
• Garden equipment engines emit high levels of carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and nitrogen oxide.
• Gas mowers consume 800 million gallons of gas per year.
• Gardeners spill 17 million gallons of fuel each year while refueling lawn equipment - more than the oil spilled by the Exxon Valdez.

Now believe that last one if you want, but I have heard 100,000 gallons spilled in the U.S. just from mowers - sounds more realistic - but whatever the volume, spilled fuel contaminates groundwater and evaporates into the air leaving volatile organic compounds that create ozone when exposed to heat and sunlight.

Electric equipment has many advantages over the gas powered models. In addition to the lack of emissions and noticeably quieter operation, they are generally cheaper than equivalent gas models, lighter in weight, require very little maintenance and are more reliable. But then there is that cord and its considerable nuisance value. And when an electric unit fails it is very difficult to find anyone to service it.

Rechargeable battery models eliminate the need to drag a cord around but the foibles of batteries to power for everything from laptops to screwdrivers is well documented.

The biggest problem with electric gardening equipment, however, is the Tim Allen factor. They lack power. An electric chain saw, for example, will cut up downed branches and is terrific for heavy pruning. But should you need to fell a full-sized tree, bring your lunch, your dinner, and pajamas. Or borrow or rent the biggest gas saw you can lift.

Now there is an alternative power source for yard equipment which eliminates many of the problems inherent in both electric and gas models. A young company named LEHR recently patented a limited variety of garden helpers that run on propane.
Propane produces 70 percent less hydrocarbons and 96 percent fewer toxins and carcinogens than gasoline and the 16.4 oz. canisters that power the tools are readily available, will not spill, and are themselves made of totally recyclable steel. A canister provides two hours of run time for the equipment.

At present LEHR only offers a string trimmer and a blower but the trimmer is essentially a power handle. The working end can be swapped out with universal tools such as tiller heads and pruners. The LEHR tools are available at Outdoor Tool Bargains 4U.
LEHR maintains that its products match gasoline equipment for power, but trimmers and pruners are not particularly power sensitive anyway. Tim Allen certainly uses a gas blower but I'll trade a little power for less weight any day.

The string trimmer costs around $200 and attachments, if they aren't already in your garage, sell for $50 to $75 each.
Late last year the EPA issued new standards for garden equipment which will take effect in 2010 and 2011. The LEHR equipment meets these new standards and recently received the agencies Clear Air Technology Award.
